The wall at the back of your staircase must have a minimum height of 60 cm for our installation to be possible.
This requirement exists because, during installation, we cut access into the staircase from the front and install our structural support framework underneath the stairs. This framework is essential as it safely reinforces the staircase while allowing the steps to lift and create usable storage space.
If the rear wall height is less than 60 cm, the wall begins to encroach into the staircase void. This reduces the available internal space and prevents us from positioning our framework correctly. Without sufficient space, we cannot safely install the system or allow two steps to lift as designed.
For this reason, a minimum 60 cm rear wall height is required to ensure a safe, secure, and fully functional installation.

Have a banister on your stairs? You’re still good to go!
Our Stair Nook can be installed in staircases with a banister. In these cases, we make a precise adjustment to the carpet along the edge of the stairs to prevent any friction as the unit opens and closes....

The result is a smooth, reliable mechanism and a clean, professional finish.

Houses built after 1990 are typically constructed using MDF or softwood (such as pine) for staircase components. These materials are generally suitable for our installation system and allow for a more reliable and consistent fit.
In contrast, older properties are often built using hardwood staircases. Over time, hardwood can develop cracks, movement, and structural wear, particularly once it has been repeatedly walked on and used over many years. This can compromise the integrity of the material when it is modified or cut into during installation.
In addition, older staircases may have naturally shifted or changed shape over time due to age and settlement of the property. This means they may no longer sit perfectly true or level when fitted onto our new support framework, which can affect alignment and operation of the system.
By comparison, MDF is a manufactured material made from compressed wood fibres, which provides a more stable and consistent structure and does not typically crack in the same way as aged hardwood.
For these reasons, the age and material of the staircase are an important factor in determining suitability for installation.
